You only get one chance as pharma with a specialist.
In pharma and biotech, collecting consent from healthcare professionals (HCPs) is often treated as a compliance checkbox. But when biotech and Pharma ignore the communication preferences of HCPs, they miss a critical opportunity, and consent rates suffer.
Where it goes wrong
Many consent campaigns are designed around internal systems and processes, not around the HCP. They push generic opt-in requests, without asking: How does this HCP prefer to be contacted and what value is (s)he looking for? Is it via phone, a rep visit, or a personal environment? The result: friction, disengagement, and low opt-in ratios.
Common pitfalls
- Over-reliance on sales rep without personalization
- No segmentation by specialty, region, or communication style
- Systems that can’t handle preferences linked to individual HCPs and the easy change of them
- Lack of immediate value at the first touchpoint by not providing it to the HCP, and or systems that lack triggering the content fast.

What happens when you do it right
Companies that align consent requests with HCP preferences and offer relevant content see consent rates climb often above 60%. Success comes from:
- Personalized outreach (e.g. phone, F2F but mainly a mix of touchpoints )
- Clear value exchange at the moment of opt-in
- Respecting the HCPs choice of channel, type of information and tim(e)ing
My final thought
Consent isn’t just a legal checkbox; it’s the start of a relationship. By treating it as a value-driven dialogue, and by respecting how HCPs want to engage, pharma companies can build trust, improve data quality, and unlock meaningful digital engagement.
